We held a focus group of 5 people between the ages of 16 and 18. The gender of our focus group was very unbalanced, as we had 4 boys to 1 girl, which may create gender bias, and may mean that the outcome of the music video may be more aimed towards boys rather than girls. We asked them to listen to the song that we are using for our video, and then asked them open, closed and probe questions about the song and what they would expect to see in a music video for it. The focus group can be seen below.
After carrying out this focus group, we have decided to set most of the music video around a council estate, showing the grittiness of London. We have also decided to incorporate narrative and performance shots in to our video, as there was a mixture of responses to this question. We also liked the idea of making some of the video black and white, so have decided to edit some of the shots to black and white after we have filmed. After watching the music videos that our focus group particularly enjoyed, we found that "View from The Afternoon" by Arctic Monkeys, really went with the gritty vibe that we wanted to give off from our music video, as it is also set in a council estate, and focuses on one boy's perserverance to succeed in life.
